This Ever Diverse Pair

The first of the Burgeon books is a somewhat comical and philosophical exploration of the legal profession. Writing this semi-autobiographical piece (for example, chapter six is based on actual events with Barfield's legal client, C. S. Lewis) purportedly helped Barfield, as well as the book's protagonist Burgeon, avert depression in addressing the division between the public and private self.

For if it is the Burdens of this world who keep traditions alive, it is the Burgeons who create them. The Burdens cannot make anything; they can only collect and preserve.
