Research and Scholarship

The Owen Barfield Literary Estate seeks to promote research and studies in the thoughts and works of Owen Barfield.

Archival work at the Bodleian Library

The Literary Estate has commissioned a catalogue of the Barfield papers held in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. The catalogue will be done to the highest, electronically-searchable, standard, and will be accessible to scholars internationally from September 2009.

This work has been generously supported by financial contributions from:

  • Michael Hall School, Sussex, England.
This is the largest Steiner Waldorf School in the UK. In 1925 it was the first to be founded in the English-speaking world. Steiner Waldorf education has grown to become the largest independent educational movement in the world with over nine hundred schools in more than sixty countries.
Owen Barfield taught at the school between 1929 and 1930.

  • The Barfield family.
Owen Barfield is survived by two of his three children - Alexander, Lucy
, and Jeffrey. Lucy, to whom C. S. Lewis dedicated his book, 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', passed away on 3 May 2003, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

Scholarly publications and secondary material

We are keen to help in the publication of secondary texts related to the works or ideas of Owen Barfield. We are publishers of the primary material, with a focus on making available important out-of-print works. However, we are able to recommend specialist publishers of secondary material in this area.

If you have a Barfield-related book or article, and would like us to help you find a suitable publisher, please contact us.
