In this science fiction dystopian novella, the three Rs of traditional education are largely replaced by the three Es (excretions) of future education. Materialism, abortion, and industrialism serve as some of the cultural influences on the story in which Aboveground versus Underground life sharply contrasts. The three male characters, Jon, Jak, and Peet are similar to Barfield, C. S. “Jack” Lewis, and A. C. Harwood respectively; and Jon learns to think and develops as a person through his study of etymology, which spurs him to react against the social and cultural norms he has always known.
