The Rose on the Ash-Heap

This Märchen, part of Barfield’s novel English People, depicts a quest for love and meaning, undertaken by the central character, the Sultan, as he searches for his Beloved. Though written in the 1920s, this imaginative tale is timely in that it addresses problems still evident in Western civilization, and the characters’ union and the tale’s apocalyptic ending calls for regeneration in society.
